Round-Up of Her Campus Articles I Wrote During Graduate School

Something I often forget is that International Women's Day is in March, which is strange because I'm a little obsessed with girlhood and what it entails.

To expand a little further on that, today I wanted to do a round-up of articles that I wrote for Her Campus UCF while I was in graduate school. I loved being a part of Her Campus when I was in undergrad, so when I came back for graduate school, I knew this would be an extra curricular that I took up.

Now, I want a central place to showcase these articles, and what better place than here, within my own portfolio? I'll be sure to link to them and talk about the thought process that went into developing these articles. I hope you'll enjoy revisiting these articles with me.

I know I keep using this photo, but I love how nonchalant it is.

What Is Her Campus?

Her Campus is a media company producing content for college women by college women. Three girls attending Harvard came up with the concept to create a media platform meant to empower college women. They made a great pitch and won a great investment, and now there are chapters on college campuses across the globe.

I joined Her Campus Media because it gave me an outlet to write, and then I stayed because it made me feel cooler than I probably was. All my campus correspondents have been so passionate about the brand that it was hard to not also love it too. So much that I even made time to participate when I was a grad student, so here are those articles.

Another Her Campus activation. I realize now my lip color might have been too dark for that outfit.

An aspect of pop culture that I got into during the 2020 pandemic was Dancing with the Stars. A blind spot that I still have would probably be a majority of the Bravo franchises, including anything Housewives. At the time I wrote this article, Teresa Guidice was cast in that season of Dancing with the Stars, and I found myself wanting to understand her a little bit more. So then this article was born.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher would probably be another pop culture blind-spot for me, but I became familiar with them during the pandemic when they made a viral comment about washing their soles and holes. This is a topical article from the time, because they were releasing That's '90s Show, a reboot to That's '70s Show where Kutcher and Kunis originally met.

You know, I was thinking about this recently when Tom Brady made a comment about how Travis Kelce would've played better if he wasn't thinking about Taylor Swift during this year's Super Bowl. Not only do I stand by what I wrote in this article, I then became more in love with Jason Kelce when he responded that, "...If [Brady] had focused on his wife more, he'd have a wife right now."

Iliza Shelsinger is one of my favorite comedians, and at the time I wrote this, she had just released a brand new Netflix special. What I love about her comedy is that she equalizes everyone before making fun of them. Her humor is not one that is meant to embarrass you forever; it is meant to embarrass you for a moment so you become aware, and then you become better. Or in the case of this article, so you become Hot Forever.

You know, I appreciated this article at the time that I wrote it, but now that I am looking at it again, I am cringing. Knowing what I know now, the Balthazar owner was probably looking for some attention for his business, and he got plenty from this public chatter. It just looked bad because James Corden is a famous person, and the situation made it look like Corden and his wife mistreat average restaurant workers. This is something I wish I could scrub from the internet, but since it will forever exist, I will apologize to James Corden about it instead (not that he needs my apology).

The show has been discontinued now, but I became obsessed with the D'Amelios when their Hulu show came out, and I loyally watched until the end. The show actually became the thing that convinced me to join TikTok, because I wanted the current, real-life updates. And that ended up being what this article was about.

And I feel like I keep having to learn the power of setting boundaries, again and again. Honestly, I think this is a part of young adulthood, the learning of the importance of boundaries and sticking to them. This was written around the holidays, so it was probably in response to a real life lesson I was learning at the time. I don't remember it now, but since I am still working on learning this, this is still relevant.

At the time of this article, I believe that Bling Empire had just dropped their final season on Netflix, which also coincided with the Lunar New Year. As an Asian American myself, I wanted to talk about how the portrayal made me feel, but I don't think I could relate to much of the show (I'm not rich on any level). This article was topical at the time, and appealed to my love of pop culture and streaming. I'm glad I got to see Dorothy Wang on screen again, but I am also glad it is over.

This article was literally published for International Women's Day, so maybe there was a time where I remembered. Or at least, there was a time where I used it to inspire this article. At the time, I believe Pamela Anderson was releasing her documentary on Netflix. Another pop culture topical article in my column. Can you tell I love it?

Food is something that I have always loved, and one of the coolest things that UCF started doing was having a storefront for local businesses to come and take over for a week. It was great for local businesses, who could tap into another market that they might not have had access to before. It was also great for students who lived on campus, because there was always something different on campus if you were getting tired of your meal plan. This article highlighted the restaurants on rotation at the time.

One of the restaurants on rotation was a food truck called Churros and Cream, and I made sure to do my own investigating on the matter. This is the evidence.

As I was wrapping up my educational career, I thought that it would be important to think about my time at UCF and what was supposed to come next. As students, we had access to many great resources, and I didn't take advantage of them all, even though I wrote the list. My intention was to do the research so I knew what I could take advantage of, and to share with others who might not have known either.

I actually took this photo sometime before starting graduate school, but it makes me miss my pink hair.

And these are the 11 articles I wrote for Her Campus UCF while I was in graduate school. Writing has always been something I loved, and to be able to combine it with pop culture and empowerment is something that made me really happy. Hopefully I can find another position like this for myself in the near future.
